House of Strength

"House of Strength" is a spiritual, physical, and musical performance that celebrates the versatility of human beings. The choreographer transforms an ancient Persian ritual into contemporary inclusive dance, highlighting the power of the collective. In Iran, Varzesh-e Pahlevani (“hero's sport”) is traditionally performed in an arena within the Zurkhaneh, or “House of Strength.” This ritual aims to cultivate better individuals through a combination of strength training, spirituality, poetry, and music, and can only be practiced in public by men.

Inspired by the octagonal shape of the original arena and its symbolic connection between earth and sky, I created an octagon of transparent luminous sheets. The arena was complemented by a luminous sun above it. This closed yet open space allowed the group of dancers to celebrate each other and the power of the collective, reimagining an ancient ritual.
